The École d'architecture Paris-Malaquais and the École des Beaux-arts de Paris invite Chris Dercon, Managing Director of the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, in connection with the "L'entour" course. The conference will be moderated by Yann Rocher (Paris-Malaquais) and Alain Berland (Beaux-arts).
The "L'entour" Master's course, devoted to the history and techniques of exhibition scenography, is offered jointly by the Paris-Malaquais School of Architecture (taught by Yann Rocher), the Beaux-Arts de Paris (taught by Alexis Bertrant) and the Pavillon Bosio - École supérieure d'arts plastiques de Monaco (taught by Thierry Leviez).

"Throughout my career, I have always been interested in display and exhibition architecture - two terms that speak louder than the simple word 'scenography'. Whether it was curators such as Alexander Dorner or Reynold Arnould, the artist Richard Hamilton or the architects Lina Bo Bardi, Carlo Scarpa or Friedrich Kiesler, these pioneers often spoke, as did others who followed, of the power of display. I have had the great pleasure of working with innovative practitioners in this field, such as Dan Graham, Rem Koolhaas, Wolfgang Tillmans and Anselm Kiefer. In this talk, I will be presenting and commenting on 40 years of experimental scenography, on which I have worked from New York to Rotterdam, via Munich, London and Paris. In addition to these names and collaborations, I will also show experimental projects in which I have participated with Hubert Damisch, Hans Haacke, Paul McCarthy, Ai Weiwei or Richard Tuttle; and the most recent: the exhibition of the photographer Juergen Teller and the architect Tom Emerson".
Chris Dercon is an art historian, curator and museum director of Belgian origin, born in Lier in 1958. He studied Art History and Theatre Studies at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden and Film Studies at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. He has worked as a teacher, critic and journalist. He has directed cultural institutions since 1988: he began as programme director of PS1 New York in 1988, in Rotterdam from 1990 to 1995 he directed the Witte de With (Melly Kunstinstituut), then the Boijmans Van Beuningen from 1996 to 2002. From 2003 to 2011 he directed the Haus der Kunst in Munich. From 2011 to 2016, he was Director of Tate Modern in London. From 2017 to 2018, he was Director of the Volksbühne Berlin. From 2019 to 2023, he was appointed President of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux et du Grand Palais, where he led the project to restore the Grand Palais. He is currently Managing Director of the Fondation Cartier, and is working on the project for the new Fondation Cartier building.
