Content and structure
The research program la Seine is intended for young artists who have completed a diploma of “master” level, or equivalent. Eligible applicants must have been actively involved in pursuing their artistic practice outside of an academic institution for a minimum of one year.
The pedagogy of the program is based on the exchange of knowledge and skills linked to artistic thought, processes, and practice. Along with offering a rich context to work in, the program seeks to provide the professional conditions for the students to best develop their future artistic direction. The program facilitates both the sharing of individual practice and group critical examination.
The program runs for two nine-month periods starting in October and ending in May, with three to six new partipants selected each year.
According to a calendar that will be defined at the beginning of the academic year, many events will be arranged such as:
- meetings with visiting artists, curators, critics, key personalities in contemporary art.
During the last three years, the program la Seine had visitors such as:
Ami Barak, Claude Closky, Alain Fleischer, Philippe Grandrieux, Hou Hanru, Gary Hill, Cameron Jamie, Isaac Julien, Christophe Kihm, Marta Kuzma, Christine Macel, Henry Meyric-Hughes, Anita Molinero, Alfred Pacquement, Giuseppe Penone, Jeff Rian, Thomas Schütte, Giuliana Carusi Setari, Alberto Sorbelli, Madeleine Van Doren,…
- presentation of their work in progress by each student, followed by a debate.
- individual follow-up meetings with Tony Brown.
- studio meetings, to discuss organisation issues related to the program.
It is required that the students of the program attend these meetings. Tony Brown oversees these sessions, sometimes with the participation of a visiting lecturer.
Extra-mural projects are proposed by Ensba each year for the group.
Each year the students in la Seine will visit a foreign country for approximately one month. With the aid of the collaborative agreements established between Ensba and foreign institutions organised by the school's exchange programs, when possible, during their stay, access to the tools necessary for the production of their works will be facilitated. Everything – from the duration of the stay to the means and resources proposed – is aimed at creating the conditions necessary for the artists to be able to produce work in situ. In 2003 the program went to Beijing, China, in 2004 to São Paulo, Brazil, in 2005 to Beirut, Lebanon, and will go to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2006.
The works created during these trips will normally be shown either on the spot at the end of the stay or the following year in an exhibition, with a catalogue.
On occasion, certain students in the program will be asked to be a part of juries for admission, and discussion sessions with students. These meetings are intended to encourage an exchange between the students in the program la Seine and the general student population of Ensba. These meetings are intended to help students in la Seine to establish a critical distance in judging their own and others' artistic production. They are required to take part in certain school events like the Open House exhibition.
